Guide to Group Riding

This page outlines essential information for London Clarion Cyclists or those joining one of our rides for the first time. It has been compiled from common enquiries we've received. If you have any questions not addressed here, please don't hesitate to ask.

General Ride Information

What to Wear:

Dress comfortably. Layers are recommended, along with a waterproof jacket. Avoid loose clothing that could get caught in your bike chain. Helmets and hi-viz jackets are optional.

Bike Suitability:

Most bikes are suitable, including hybrids, mountain bikes, road bikes, and gravel bikes. If unsure, consult the ride leader.

What to Bring:

  • Spare inner tube

  • Tyre levers

  • Multi-tool

  • Bike pump

  • Phone holder

  • Lights

  • Drinks and snacks

  • Lock (two for London rides)

  • Small battery pack

  • Optional: Helmet, sunglasses, cash, maps/GPS, first aid kit.

Ride Difficulty:

  • Easy: <30 miles, quieter roads, no steep hills, relaxed pace. Suitable for less experienced riders.

  • Medium: 30-50 miles, may include hills, slightly busier roads, moderate pace (10-13 mph).

  • Hard: 35+ miles, hilly, potentially faster traffic, quicker pace (up to 20 mph on flats, average 10-14 mph).

Ride Leaders:

  • Plan routes, share information before a ride, provide directions during a ride.

  • Aim to keep the group together, but may need to ask riders to leave the ride for safety reasons.

Rider Responsibilities:

  • Review ride information.

  • Update Spond if unable to make a ride.

  • Inform the ride leader of any medical conditions.

  • Ensure your bike is roadworthy.

  • Prioritise safety.

  • Adhere to the Highway Code.

  • Download the route.

  • Bring adequate refreshments.

  • Follow ride leader instructions.

  • Communicate if leaving the ride.

  • Be responsible for any damage or loss.
